Description

Creation context

Started on March 8th 2021 by Taher Leksouri (Writing, Production, Game Design) and Loïck Noa Obiang Ndong (Programming, Production, DevOps) to get a better understanding of the creation process of a multiplayer video game by porting the medieval/dark fantasy universe of Alternia1, imagined by the two for a role-play discord server, to another medium. The team was later joined by Thomas Ridez (Art , Level Design, UI/UX Design)

Our goal

Our goal for this project is to create an immersive cooperative experience for medieval and dark fantasy enthusiasts like ourselves, as well as hone our respective skills in a "real world" production setting.

Project's description

Alternia is a top-down rpg taking place in the medieval/dark fantasy universe of Alternia1, imagined by Taher Leksouri and myself. You will play as a member of one of the five (5) available factions: vampires, undead, dolls, lepers and bandits, each with its own unique gameplay and story-line, in addition to the main quest-line. You will evolve in a remote region, a welcoming land for marginalized creatures and outlaws.

What I learned

  • As the only programmer of the team, I had to rethink the way I work, putting a bigger focus on developing intuitive tools to simplify the other members' workflow. Not only did this allow me to hone my tools programming skills, it also was a great opportunity to further my understanding of the other departments' needs.
  • Since the game supports online cooperation, I had to learn the fundamentals of online games programming using Mirror, an open source API designed to simplify the creation of multiplayer games with a client/server architecture in C#.
  • Being in charge of the team allowed me to improve my communication and management skills, as well as my analytical and critical thinking abilities.
  • Working on key aspects of game development I don't usually take care off, such as production and DevOps, allowed me to further understand a game's full development cycle.
